In a report by Minimachines, it looks like Acer is going to release an 8-inch version of their Windows 8 tablet and it’s not the RT type. The Acer Iconia W3 is powered by an Intel Atom CPU, 2GB RAM and Windows 8.
No other details were given, such as the screen resolution, battery or cameras. The tablet is found to feature accessories such as a keyboard though, and other things such as a stylus weren’t stated. The original report was already taken down, rumored to be requested by Acer itself; the details seem all too real for us to call it a fake.
Windows 8 still can’t be found on smaller form factors, as they were all aiming to replace the average laptop through hybrids (and because of spec limitations). But since the market is leaning towards tablets like the Galaxy Tab 7, the Note 8.0, the iPad Mini and the Nexus 7, it’s a no-brainer for manufacturers to test the waters here as well – and the Acer Iconia W3 may be the first one here.
The Windows 8.1 update (Blue) may hit soon, and this might enable other companies to engage the 7-inch to 9-inch market with Windows. Who knows? Maybe if they become successful, we might see a ‘phablet’ running Windows 8 Pro in the future.
