We’ve handled a lot of Coby Kyros tablets in the past, with the last being the Kyros MID1045 from last year. Now we have the Coby Kyros MID1054 – an 10-incher with an Intel Atom processor under the hood.
In terms of design, the Kyros MID1054 is not much different from the Kyros MID1045 we’ve reviewed last year. It still has that matte grey aluminum body with a chrome strip surrounding the bezel.
Located on the front is the 10.1-inch WXGA LCD display and the 0.3MP front-facing camera. On the left side are the power/lock button, volume rocker, reset pinhole and microSD card slot. The left side is devoid of any buttons. Right on top is the headset jack, while down at the bottom are the charging port, HDMI out and micro USB port. Flip it on its back and you’ll see the dual speakers and 2MP rear camera.
Speaking of the camera, it can take 2 megapixel stills, record videos and do Panoramic shots, but do not expect much in terms of quality. Take a look at the sample shot below:
What Coby is actually fronting here is the 1.6GHz Intel Atom Medfield Z2460 CPU placed at the heart of the Kyros. Basically it’s a single-core processor with support for Hyperthreading. We put it under a complete set of benchmarks and here are the results:
* AnTuTu Benchmark – 10,524
* Quadrant Standard – 3,715
* Vellamo HTML 5 – 1,441
* Vellamo Metal – 540
* NenaMark2 – 27.4fps (PowerVR SGX540)
Although the numbers don’t impress much, the MID1054 is the best performing Kyros tablet we’ve handled so far. It’s not flawlessly fast but it feels much stable now and more fluid compared to its older cousins. It’s still on Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.4) but it now has Google Play Store on board which comes as a good surprise.
As for battery life, Coby promises that the 5,150mAh battery can last up to 8 hours on full HD video playback on a single full charge. Sounds good on paper but we highly doubt that it can deliver that much. It’s more like 4 to 6 hours at best.
Overall, the Coby Kyros MID1054 is a slightly upgraded version of the Kyros MID1045 from last year. Coby just changed the processor, and bumped up the internal storage and battery capacity. It is a slight upgrade but a good one nonetheless.
