Want to see something cooler than a power bank? Take a look at Kraftwerk, a fuel cell power generator that utilizes standard lighter gas to produce electricity and charge your mobile devices.
Before we go any further, I’d like to emphasize that this is not a power bank. Power banks use built-in batteries to store power which will then be used to charge your devices. Kraftwerk, on the other hand, uses fuel cell technology and converts (by checmical reaction) standard camping gas or lighter gas directly into electricity.
To make it work, all you need to do is fill its tank with lighter gas for a few seconds and it’s good to go. According to eZelleron Inc., makers of Kraftwerk, one filling is enough for 11 iPhone charges. So unlike power banks, Kraftwerk doesn’t need charging times. When it runs out just refill it with gas and you can use again right away.
Kraftwerk has a single USB port for charging and is capable of 2W of continuous output, 10W peak power, and 5V of output voltage. It weighs in at 160g when empty and 200g when full. For comparison the Xiaomi Mi Power Bank 10400mAh weighs in at 250g.
Kraftwerk is currently on Kickstarter but it has already achieved its $500,000 goal with almost $930,000 in pledges and still has 30 days left for funding. eZelleron Inc. expects to start shipping Kraftwerk in December 2015.
