The Samsung Galaxy Note 3, as with some of the recently released flagship smartphones, has the ability to record videos at 4K resolution. But how does it stack up against a respectable full-frame DSLR camera like the Canon 5D Mark III? Alec Weinstein, a cinematographer, goes out of his way to show us just that.
In his video, Alec Weinstein placed the videos captured by the two contenders in a single frame (one above the other) and let the viewers guess which clip was captured by which. At first, it can be a bit tricky to tell which video was shot using the Galaxy Note, but after a few comparisons you’ll easily pick out one from the other.
For the said test, Alec mounted a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 lens on the Canon 5D Mark III. He shot at 1/200 shutter speed, ISO 100, at f/13 aperture and set the White Balance to 5600K. Although he mentioned that there were no in-camera adjustments (color, saturation and/or filters) done on the 5D Mark III during the test, he noted that there was post-processing involved to match the output of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
As for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, he just basically let the handset do its own thing by setting it on Auto. He recorded the clips using the smartphone’s default camera app at the camera’s native resolution (3840×2160) and just downsized the file to 1080p on post-process.

Judging by the sample videos above, it seems that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is the victor in this shoot-out. But as Alec pointed out, this comparison is not intended to show which one is better at video recording, rather to highlight what handsets like the SGN3 bring to the table and that the “4K arm’s race is in full swing”.
